Yes. MarkEdit is free and open source, released under the MIT License. There is no paid tier to unlock. You can read the code, report a bug, or contribute on GitHub.
The current release requires macOS 26 or later. For Macs running macOS 12 through 15, you can find compatible releases in the installation guide.
Yes. Install the optional View Modes extension to switch between Markdown source editing, side-by-side or overlay previews, and Mixed mode, which hides Markdown syntax while you edit. Choose a mode from Extensions > View Mode. The core app stays focused on editing; you choose the extras.
